Colon Hydrotherapy: Your Questions Answered
The things people most often want to know — including the ones they feel awkward asking.
The Treatment
Does it hurt?
It shouldn’t. Most people describe a mild fullness followed by relief, in waves. Some experience brief, crampy sensations as the bowel contracts — these pass quickly. You can ask to slow down, pause or stop at any point and I will.
Is it embarrassing?
Almost everyone worries about this and almost nobody finds it as bad as they feared. You’re covered throughout, the room is private with its own en-suite, and the closed system means there is no odour whatsoever. For me this is simply routine clinical work.
How long does it take?
The treatment itself is about 40 minutes. Allow 75 to 90 minutes for a first appointment including consultation, and around 60 minutes for follow-up visits.
Is it hygienic?
Yes. Every client has brand-new, sterile, single-use disposables. The water is filtered and the equipment is professionally serviced and maintained. Nothing is ever reused.
Will I need to rush to a toilet afterwards?
You have private use of the en-suite immediately after the session for as long as you like. Most people feel entirely comfortable leaving. It’s normal for bowel movements to be a little unpredictable for a day or so.
Can I go back to work afterwards?
Most people do. A few feel a little tired and prefer a quiet afternoon. If it’s your first session, it’s sensible not to plan anything demanding straight after.
Suitability & Safety
Who should not have colon hydrotherapy?
It is not suitable during pregnancy, during an active flare of Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, with active diverticulitis, following bowel or abdominal surgery within six months, with severe haemorrhoids, fissures or rectal bleeding, with known or suspected bowel cancer or polyps, with serious heart, kidney or liver disease, with uncontrolled high blood pressure, with an abdominal hernia, or after a recent heart attack or stroke. This isn’t a complete list — your consultation covers your circumstances individually.
I take regular medication. Is that a problem?
Usually not, but always tell me what you take when you book. Some medications need timing around the session, and a few mean the treatment isn’t advisable. If in doubt, check with your GP or pharmacist first.
Does it wash away good gut bacteria?
This is a fair question and one that’s genuinely debated. The gut microbiome is largely populated within the mucosal lining and repopulates naturally. That said, I routinely suggest a good probiotic and a fibre-rich diet afterwards, and I don’t recommend frequent, repeated sessions.
Is it safe?
When carried out by a trained therapist with proper screening and sterile equipment, colon hydrotherapy is generally well tolerated. Risks are low but not zero, which is exactly why the consultation and the contraindication list matter. Anyone who tells you a therapy is entirely risk-free isn’t being straight with you.
Should I tell my GP?
If you have any ongoing digestive symptoms, an existing bowel condition, or you’re under medical care, yes — please speak to your GP first. Colon hydrotherapy is complementary and doesn’t replace medical investigation of symptoms.
Results & Frequency
How many sessions will I need?
Many people are perfectly happy with one. If you’re working towards a specific goal, a short course of three sessions over a few weeks is common. I’ll give you an honest recommendation rather than a sales pitch, and I won’t suggest more than I think you need.
How often can I have treatments?
Typically no more than one session per week during a course, and thereafter as occasional maintenance — perhaps every few months if you find it helpful. Frequent, ongoing use isn’t something I encourage.
Will I lose weight?
You may notice a small immediate drop on the scales and a flatter stomach, but this reflects the removal of waste and water rather than fat loss. Colon hydrotherapy is not a weight loss treatment and I won’t sell it as one.
Will I feel different straight away?
Many people feel lighter and less bloated immediately. Others notice more over the following day or two. A small number feel a bit tired or headachy for a few hours — drinking plenty of water helps.
Practical Questions
What should I wear?
Loose, comfortable clothing. You’ll change into a gown for the treatment and there is a private space to do so.
Can I come during my period?
Yes, it’s perfectly fine and won’t affect the treatment. Just mention it when you arrive so I can make sure you’re comfortable.
Do you treat men and women?
Yes, all adults are welcome.
Is there parking?
Yes, free parking is available on site. Full directions are sent with your booking confirmation.
What if I need to cancel?
Please give at least 24 hours’ notice so the slot can be offered to someone else. Cancellations inside 24 hours may be charged.
Still Have a Question?
Ask me anything at all — nothing is too small or too awkward. I’d much rather you arrived feeling informed.
